Knowing Your Luxury Watch Terminology

Sometimes when you are trying to decide on a designer watch, it can help to know some of the terminology.  Think about it.  If you were to go to a sporting event, one you never had seen or heard of, would it not help you understand what was going on a bit better if you just had some of the terminology down pat?  It would help to know that the person tossing the ball in baseball is a pitcher.  It would help you get a better understanding of the game if you knew the difference between balls and strikes.  This is true in almost anything.  If you decide you want to go into a jewelry story and look at Chopard watches, it would certainly help to know some of the terminology the jeweler might use to describe those watches.  With that in mind, let us review some of these terms.

When looking at gold watches do not get confused by the term karat.  You might think the jeweler is confused because diamonds and carats go together.  That is true.  But karat with a “k” is what is used to discuss purity of gold.  Another term to know is bezel.  This is the ring surrounding the watch dial.  When you hear the word, chronograph know that this indicates the watch is set with a stopwatch.  The balance is not something that only pertains to trapeze artists.  This is a tiny part that is the basis for the movement of the watch.  A skeleton is not a scary thing.  Instead it is the transparent case that displays the inside and movement of the watch.  Lastly, the tourbillion is a newer development in watches.  It is significant because it eliminates friction and gravity thus making a watch more precise.  With these terms, you can now feel more confident while discussing luxury timepieces with your jeweler and watch dealer.
